Every day our Austin obgyns see patients who come to us for help with the pain they are experiencing during sexual intercourse. This is not a small problem—it is an issue that can cause problems in relationships, issues with self-esteem and physical pain and discomfort. A condition called atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal atrophy is related to decreased estrogen levels. In the past we could only offer treatments that required daily use , were messy and lacked spontaneity, or had risks such as estrogen.
Bothersome vaginal changes occur when estrogen levels fall at any age, not just after menopause.
Atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal atrophy, occurs when the vaginal walls are no longer receiving the estrogen they need, and the result is dryer, thinner, less elastic and more sensitive vaginal tissue. You may also experience bladder irritation and urgency and even incontinence. This estrogen loss is most often due to the drop in estrogen that occurs during menopause and perimenopause or after hysterectomy. However many ovarian or breast cancer treatments, including tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors, cause changes in vaginal health. Breast feeding moms have lower estrogen levels and commonly experience vaginal dryness and painful intercourse.
